The following recommended films and books are from, and about, a time when Hollywood was young and movies were magic. I've selected each film and book for its overall quality and for its entertainment value. Each and every one of them would make a perfect gift for a friend, a loved one or, perhaps, even yourself.
(In keeping with the focus of this web site, each selected film was released between the years 1893 and 1960, or is set during that period in motion picture history.)

Released in 1941 by
Universal Pictures
Although this was not the first movie to feature a Wolf Man, it has certainly become the most memorable. This story of a man cursed to unwillingly change into a fierce wolf whenever there is a full moon was seen by the screenplay's author, Curt Siodmak, to be the stuff of classic Greek tragedy. He wrote that, "Life itself contains the curse of the Wolf Man: sufferings without having been guilty, being subjected to fates which are decided by the pleasure of the gods."
When the movie was released it definitely struck a sympathetic cord with moviegoers. Becoming Universal Picture's highest grossing film of 1941, it gave Lon Chaney, Jr. his signature role and immortalized Siodmak's "ancient poem":
Even a man who is pure in heart
and says his prayers by night,
may become a wolf when the wolf bane blooms
and the autumn moon is bright.
So curl up with a bowl of popcorn and watch this 1941 classic before you watch the 2010 remake starring Anthony Hopkins and Benicio Del Toro. You won't be disappointed.
